What Are the Benefits of Citrus Fruits?

Citrus fruits, as well as their juices, contain many essential vitamins and minerals, including: vitamins C, D and B6, calcium, phosphorous, potassium, niacin and pantothenic acid. These fruits, such as oranges, tangerines, grapefruits and lemons, are an important part of a healthy diet.

  1. Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease

    • Consuming citrus fruits while maintaining a diet low in saturated fats and cholesterol can help prevent the onset of heart disease. Citrus fruits, because they are high in vitamin C, can help prevent the formation of oxidized LDL, or bad cholesterol.

    Healthy Bones, Ligaments and Muscles

    • Vitamin C aids in the formation of collagen, which is an important part of the connective tissues within the body. The synthesis of collagen will ultimately lend to stronger tendons, ligaments and muscles. Because citrus fruits are also high in calcium and vitamin D, they contribute to bone health as well.

    Eye Health

    • Due to its anti-oxidizing effect on the lens of the eye, vitamin C, as found in citrus fruits, helps prevent the formation of cataracts. Other antioxidants found in citrus fruits also help remove free radicals that may otherwise damage the retina.

    Improved Mood and Cognitive Function

    • Citrus foods are high in folate, an important part of serotonin production. Higher levels of serotonin lead to a better mood, increased happiness and more energy. Vitamin C and a nutrient-rich diet have also been shown to improve cognitive function in the elderly.

    Better Skin

    • Citrus fruits contain phytonutrients which act as antioxidants. These antioxidants remove free radicals that damage skin cells and cause the signs of aging. The ability of vitamin C to produce collagen also benefits the skin.
