Tagamet for the Parvo Virus in Dogs

A diagnosis of Parvo virus infection can be frightening for a dog owner to face. This virus can be deadly, but medical advances are making this virus and its symptoms easier to treat. Many dogs survive this disease and go on to live healthy lives.

      Parvo is a virus discovered in canine feces during the 1960s. It causes nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, and often leads to severe dehydration. This is a treatable disease, but success decreases dramatically if the affected dog is less than 8 weeks old. (Reference 1)

    • Tagamet, also known as cimetidine, reduces the amount of stomach acid produced in dogs. (Reference 2)

    • Tagamet is used to treat the stomach upset that causes nausea and vomiting. It allows the sick dog to begin replenishing vital fluids lost through the vomiting commonly associated with parvo virus.
