Contact lens wearers should always follow the recommended wearing and cleaning procedures for their lenses. Using proper lens care fights extends their life and prevents eye infection.

  1. Microorganisms

    • Storing contact lenses in tap water can cause contacts to come in contact with a microorganism called Acanthamoeba.

    Improper Storage

    • Acanthamoeba causes an eye infection called acanthamoeba keratitis. This infection is usually contracted when contact lenses are stored in tap water or well water. Contact lens cleaners can remove many types of bacteria from contact lenses, but the acanthamoeba bacteria is resistant to those solutions.

    Improper Cleaning

    • Never use a homemade solution or homemade cleaning solvents on your contact lenses.

    • Tap water does not disinfect contact lenses. Contact lens disinfectant purchased from a retail outlet or your eye specialist should be used daily to remove buildup.

    Proper Cleaning

    • Acanthamoeba keratits can be prevented if contacts are stored properly and are cleaned as directed by your vision specialist. Always use the recommended contact solution for cleaning.
