House Guest Bathroom Etiquette

The house guest and the host both have a set of responsibilities regarding guest bathroom etiquette. Whether the house guest is sharing a bathroom with the host family or using a guest bathroom, the host should ensure that the bathroom is stocked properly and the guest should do his best to keep that bathroom clean and in order. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Host Responsibilities

    • The host should provide a clean guest bathroom. This is essential to making guests feel at home. The Emily Post Institute cites a study by the manufacturer of Quilted Northern Ultra Plush™ 3-ply bath tissue indicating that 83 percent of visitors judge a host based on the quality and presentation of her guest bathroom.

    Toilet Etiquette

    • Guests and hosts should always close the lid when flushing and leave it down after use. This prevents toilet water splashing, odor and the spread of germs.

    Considerations

    • Guests should aim to leave the guest bathroom the way they found it. While a guest isn't expected to clean the entire bathroom, he should close the lids on shampoo bottles and return all conveniences to their original locations.

    Considerations

    • Some hosts have items in their homes for decorative purposes only. If a guest notices paper towels in addition to fancy hand towels, she should assume she is expected to use the paper towels.

    Shower Rules

    • Guests should feel inclined to use any items placed in the guest bathroom's shower. If the guest is sharing a bathroom with the host and their family, however, he should use his own bar soap or body wash and should ask before using the shampoo.

    Toilet Etiquette

A guest is expected to keep the toilet lid down and wash her hands using the soap provided. She shouldn't leave excessive droplets of water around. Male guests in particular should aim properly and wipe up any extraneous urine off the floor or toilet. If the bathroom user produces any odors, he should use the fan and available air deodorizer.
