English Grammar: What Is a Telling Statement?

The most commonly used sentence in English is the declarative sentence, also known as the telling statement. We speak and write telling statements, or declarative statements, every day.

Definition

In English, a telling statement is called a declarative statement. It is one of the four types of English sentences.

What it Does

A declarative statement gives information. It tells, or declares, pieces of information to others.

Some Examples

The weather is 10 degrees below normal for this time of year.
My sister is currently studying art at the Columbus Art Institute.

Rules of Grammar

Every declarative statement begins with a capital letter and ends with a period.

Writing Tip

When writing a paragraph, an essay or an article, many declarative statements will be used. Prevent choppiness and repetition in your writing style by varying the beginning of your declarative sentences. Start some with a simple word, others with a phrase and some with a dependent clause.
