What is the Human Growth Hormone Diet?

The Human Growth Hormone Diet is a controversial weight loss method in which the dieter is injected daily with hCG. HCG is short for for Human Choriogonadotropin, the hormone produced by women in the early stages of pregnancy.

  1. How it Works

    • During the first trimester of pregnancy, the hormone hCG allows the body to mobilize fat and vitamins into the newly-formed placenta. When used as a weight loss tool in non-pregnant dieters, the hormone signals the hypothalamus to hold onto muscle and begin shedding fat. It is used in conjunction with a very low-calorie diet consisting of 500 to 700 calories a day.

    Very Low Calorie Diet

    • During the first two days of the diet, participants are advised to eat large amounts of calories, totaling 3,000 to 5,000 calories. During this phase, the dieter injects the hCG hormone. The large amount of calories is said to jumpstart the hormonal process. Beginning the third day, the participant must adhere to a very strict 500 to 700 calorie diet. All processed foods, flour and sugar are prohibited.

    Sample Menu

    • In the morning, the dieter is allowed coffee and tea with a tablespoon of non-fat milk. Artificial sweetener may be added if desired; sugar is not permitted. Lunch and dinner should each consist of one portion of lean meat (about the size of your palm) along with one low-glycemic vegetable. For dessert, a citrus, low-glycemic fruit can be consumed.

    Exercise

    • Strenuous exercise is not recommended during this diet, although gentle yoga or walking may be preformed for up to 30 minutes a day.

    Side Effects

    • The Human Growth Hormone Diet is controversial, and many side effects have been recorded like depression, headaches and blood clots. Before embarking on any diet, check with your doctor.
