Treatment for Biceps Tendinitis

Biceps tendinitis is the inflammation of the long head of the biceps tendon, which is connected to the shoulder bone, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Treatment usually includes a combination of rest, medication, ice and exercise.

  1. Significance

    • The first step in recovering from biceps tendinitis is to rest and avoid lifting the arm overhead. Rest can help prevent further irritation to the tendon.

    Types of Treatment

    • People with biceps tendinitis can take anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen or naproxen to reduce inflammation, swelling or pain. Doctors may prescribe a cortisone shot for more-severe pain.

    Other Types of Treatment

    • Ice should be used at 20-minute intervals throughout the day, especially during the first 48 hours. According to the Mayo Clinic, ice reduces inflammation and swelling by temporarily restricting the flow of blood to the biceps tendon.

    Effects of Exercise

    • Once the initial inflammation and pain are under control, certain stretching and resistance exercises can help increase mobility and strength in the biceps tendon.

    Warning

    • Never use ice directly on the skin. Also, it is always best to have a doctor properly diagnose biceps tendinitis in case their is a significant tear. In that case, surgery may be required.

    Time Frame

    • It usually takes up to six weeks or longer to recover from biceps tendinitis, according to the University of Michigan Health System.
