What Is a Saw Miter Joint?

A saw miter joint is the intersection of two pieces of material that join at an angle. Miter joints can be cut on a power miter box or with a table saw, band saw or hand saw. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Straight Miters

    • A straight miter is an angle which is cut with the a saw blade at a 90 degree angle to the saw table. A straight miter is usually seen on doors and windows.

    Compound Miters

    • In addition to setting your saw table at an angle, the saw blade and motor is also tilted to created a compound miter. Compound miters are found on crown moldings or sometimes on door and window casing. This occurs when they are unable to lay flat against the wall because the jamb is either set-in or extends past the drywall.

    Cutting Miters

    • It is sometimes difficult to make a tight miter because the miter box is hard to move 1/4 or 1/2 degree. Use thin wood shims 3/4 inch by about 3 inches to place between the wood and the saw fence to make an adjustment without moving the saw table.

    Joining Miters

    • Miters should be glued and nailed together to keep them tight in both high and low humidity. Place nails into both pieces to draw the miter tight. Just use one nail if the stock is not thick enough to support two nails. You may have to shim one piece if the pieces do not line up perfectly.

    Reinforcing Miters

    • The miter is strengthened greatly if you can glue triangular blocks on the inside. This technique is used to reinforce cabinets, boxes and other applications where the blocks will not be seen.
