Sacrum Ilium Joint Pain

The sacroiliac joint is where the sacrum vertebrae in the lower back connects to the ilium or hip bone, according to the Sports Injury Clinic. A person can stretch or injure ligaments between these two bones by falling or wrenching his or her back.

  1. Identification

    • Sacroiliac pain is usually felt between the lower back and hip area. Symptoms can include pain, stiffness and difficulty moving around. Sometimes, the sciatic nerve can be affected by sacroiliac pain, which can cause pain to radiate down the legs to the feet and toes.

    Types of Treatment

    • Individuals with sacroiliac pain should rest their back and suspend all physical activity for awhile. Back braces can be used to limit movement and prevent further injury.

    Other Types of Treatment

    • Heat can be used to treat muscles that have tightened up because of sacroiliac pain. Moreover, anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen and naproxen can help reduce inflammation, swelling and pain.

    Effects of Exercise

    • Once the initial inflammation and pain have subsided, certain stretching and resistance exercises can help increase flexibility and strength in the back, buttocks and hip. This will increase stability in the sacroiliac joint.

    Considerations

    • A doctor may need to do a corticosteroid injection to alleviate sacroiliac pain if conventional treatments do not relieve it.
