How Are Laptops & Desktops Similar?

There are many similarities between laptops and desktops. In many ways, a laptop is simply a small desktop and both share many similar components. Here are some of the similarities.

  1. Operating System

    • Laptops and desktops can run on the same-type operating system. As long as there are drivers available for hardware components to function, an operating system should run on either type of computer.

    Motherboard

    • Both laptops and desktops operate on a "motherboard." All other components essentially connect to this main circuit board and communicate.

    Video Card and Display

    • Both laptops and desktops use a video card and a visual display of some kind. This enables a portable user or a desktop user to view computer output.

    Processor

    • Both laptops and desktops also have one or more processors. The processor performs requested calculations.

    Memory

    • Both laptops and desktops have system memory, known as RAM (random-access memory). The memory performs storing of temporary data.
