Define Data Communication Technology

Communication technology, like email and instant messages, is made possible through data communications. Data communications enables computer communication through the process of sharing a virtual message. Data communications sends virtual messages through the process of serial-transmission.

Components

Data communications involves three basic components---a transistor (person sending the message), data (the virtual message), and a destination (the message's receiver).

Types

The types of data communications are classified by the direction of the communication. Simplex channel (one way communication), half-duplex system (communicating back and forth), and full-duplex system (communicating at the same time) are the classifications of data communications.

Computer Hardware

Computer communication requires a LAN (Local Area Network) connection, which is built into the back of most computers. The LAN connection enables a computer to exchange data with other computers.

Serial Transmission

Serial transmission involves breaking down data into small packages. When the data arrives at its destination the small packages are put into sequential order, recreating the message.

Significance

Society has come to rely on communication technology and data communications in day to day communication. For example, email is the most common form of written communication.
