Post Surgical Treatment of Internal Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are characterized by swollen veins near the rectal and anus regions. With internal hemorrhoids the swelling takes place toward the inner surface of the anal and rectal canal. Increased pressure exertion as a result of constipation or diarrhea are common causes of hemorrhoids. Numerous treatments are available to cure the condition.

  1. Identification

    • A physical examination in which a doctor inserts a gloved finger through your rectum is a common procedure to detect internal hemorrhoids.

    Post-Surgical Treatments

    • Post-surgery you may be advised to apply over-the-counter creams containing witch hazel and cortisone in order to prevent recurrence of the hemorrhoids. Warm-water baths may also be recommended in order to reduce the pain post surgery.

    Time Frame

    • Doctors generally recommend application of over-the-counter creams for 7 to 10 days post surgery.

    • Over applying the creams may result in skin rashes, irritations, and inflammation of the skin.

    • As per the Mayo Clinic, eating a fiber-rich diet and drinking eight to 10 glasses of water often helps prevent the development of hemorrhoids (including internal hemorrhoids).
