Identification
-
Continuing professional education are classes or training that allow you to stay up to date in your career. It can either refresh information on things you once learned or teach you about new information or technology that has been developed.
Types
-
Online classes, company training and traditional college classes can all be used to provide continuing education. Who pays the cost will depend on the program and why you are taking the class.
-
Benefits
-
By staying up to date in your field it allows you to be as competitive as the people who are just finishing school. It also allows you to discuss issues that come up in every day life with professionals that might have the same question or have worked through it already.
Concerns
-
If your employer does not pay for these classes, then it could be costly for you. This is especially detrimental if you need to do it in order to keep your job and cannot afford it. Also, when this is done in addition to time spent at work, it will take away time from other things such as your family.
Considerations
-
Employers do not always provide opportunities for continuing professional education. If that is the case, offer to organize something that will benefit the whole group. This will allow you to fulfill training you need for your license while ensuring that the topic is beneficial to your career.
