What Are the Differences Between Sewing Equipment & Sewing Tools?

Some people use the terms "sewing equipment" and "sewing tools" interchangeably, but among sewing experts a distinction is drawn between these terms. This article describes the difference between these two categories of sewing supplies.

Sewing Machines

Sewing equipment includes all types of machines that are used for sewing. Besides the basic sewing machine, there are overlock machines (also known as sergers), embroidery machines and quilting machines.

Machine Accessories

Sewing machine accessories also fall under the category of sewing equipment. This includes machine needles, thread bobbins, presser feet and special attachments like rufflers and pintuck feet.

Sewing Tools

Sewing tools are aids that help complete different sewing tasks. Some sewing tools, such as scissors and needles, are essential. Others are convenient time-savers that make sewing easier and more fun.

Measuring, Cutting and Marking Tools

Measuring tools for sewing include tape measures and rulers. Cutting tools include dressmaker's shears, pinking shears, rotary cutters and thread clips. Marking tools, which are used in the construction of garments, include chalk, marking pens and tracing paper.

Hand Sewing Tools

Needles, thread and pins are essential tools for hand sewing. Many people would include a thimble in this list.
