Nutrition After Lung Cancer Surgery

The key to regaining your strength after lung cancer surgery is a healthy diet that consists of plenty of nutrient-dense fruits and vegetables, as well as protein to provide your body energy.

Post Surgery

Your may experience a loss of appetite or nausea after surgery, but you must maintain nutrition to stay hydrated and healthy. You will be given IV fluids, clear liquids or ice chips shortly after surgery, according to the American Cancer Society.

Fruits and Vegetables

Increase your consumption of fruits and vegetables, as they are high in vitamins including vitamin A, E, C and D. These vitamins help maintain healthy functioning, and vitamin E may lower your risk of developing lung cancer again. Fruits and vegetables should be 30 percent of your daily diet. Eat vegetables that are high in fiber, especially dark, leafy greens. Eat apples, oranges, berries and dried fruit to get fiber.

Low-Fat Dairy

Low-fat dairy, including milk, cheese and yogurt, should be consumed because they are easier on your digestive tract, which will be sensitive for weeks after having surgery.

Meat

Although meat is high in protein, it can also be high in saturated fat and cholesterol. Limit your meat intake to 15 percent of your daily diet, and choose lean meat such as fish, turkey and skinless poultry.

Meal Portions

Break your meals up into smaller portions and spread them evenly throughout the day. Five to six small meals is easier on your body than three large meals, and can help reduce nausea.
