Post-surgery, doctors might recommend applying over-the-counter creams containing witch hazel or cortisone, in order to prevent recurrence of the hemorrhoids.

Time Frame

You may be advised to apply the creams for 10 to15 days after surgery.

Effects

Over-application of over-the-counter creams may result in complications such as skin rashes, irritations, inflammation and flaking, among others.

According to the Mayo Clinic, having a fiber rich diet and consuming 6 to 10 glasses of water daily are some of the measures you can take to avoid development of hemorrhoids (including thrombosed hemorrhoids).
