Why Should Schools Have Uniforms & Dress Codes?

Some people may consider a dress code a worthless rule, however dress codes prevent certain negative effects, as well as even offering a few benefits.

  1. Gang Prevention

    • A few schools in rough neighborhoods have instated dress codes to prevent gangs from flaunting their colors to rivals. Some say this reduces school violence.

    Sex

    • If the school does not have a basic dress code, students are allowed to wear whatever they please. Some girls may wear skimpy outfits that spark the hormones of teenage boys. School uniforms may subconsciously discourage teenage sex.

    Political Correctness

    • Some believe in dress codes and school uniforms to prevent students from wearing clothing or messages on clothing that may offend others. This is consider the politically correct dress code.

    Discipline

    • If you establish a rule that forces students to adhere to a particular dress code, the student will ultimately learn discipline or be punished. School uniforms are one way to teach adolescents discipline.

    Responsibility

    • Along with discipline, students learn responsibility with school uniforms. They must make sure the clothes are washed and ready for school on Monday. They also must make sure they wear the uniform every single day.
