Can You Hook Up PS3 Controllers to Your PC?

PS3 Dualshock and Sixaxis controllers can be connected to your PC, but lack functionality without a number of additional software downloads and tweaks. After installing appropriate software, PS3 controllers are capable of interacting with any PC game.

Required Hardware

A PC running Windows 2000 or newer and a USB cord with a Mini-B end are required. The Mini-B end connects into the controller's charging port; with the other end connecting to a USB port on your computer.

Required Software

Window's does not come with a driver for PS3 controllers; therefore, a third-party driver must be downloaded. These are easy to find. Search for "DualShock 3 for PC" driver and follow the installation instructions.

Misconceptions: Universal Bluetooth

PS3 controllers interact with the PS3 via wireless Bluetooth technology. However, out of the box, they do not universally pair with a PC's Bluetooth.

Pairing Bluetooth

Additional drivers and software are required, to do this as well. One of these is offered by MotionInJoy.com. However, a USB connection is easier, as you must connect the controller via USB to pair it with third-party Bluetooth applications.

Using the PS3 Controller

Not all games support the use of gamepads. If you want to use your PS3 controller in a game lacking peripheral support, then download and install "XPadder." This program allows you to map keyboard controls to your PS3 controller.
