What Are the Parts of the Airplane Propeller?

An airplane's propeller is simply two or more aerodynamically twisted blades attached together at the hub. The assembly of a propeller system is comprised of various parts depending on the type of engine and design of an aircraft.

  1. Propeller Blades

    • The blades of the propeller are the two parts extending from the center. The blades are actually wings which move through the air pushing the air to the back of the plane to make the plane move forward.

    Hub

    • The center location where the two blades connect is called the hub. The hub is attached to the aircraft engine's crankshaft through gears that spin the propeller.

    Spinner

    • The spinner is a cone shape device which covers the hub to streamline the airplane and direct air to the engine for cooling.

    Governor

    • Some airplanes have propellers that change angles depending on the flight conditions to get the most efficient use of the blades. Oil pressure entering and leaving the governor rotates the blades to different angles.

    Accessories

    • Some propellers are designed with systems to melt or break ice that gets attached to the blades.
