Types
-
The four most popular types of impatiens are Impatiens walleriana, Impatiens balsamina, Impatiens sodenii and Impatiens New Guinea hybrids.
Time frame
-
Impatiens flower about two months after you plant them. Their peak flowering time stretches from spring to autumn, but if guarded from frost, they will continue to flower during winter.
-
Features
-
Impatiens have five petals, grow up to two feet in height and have a wide variety of colors. Common colors include red, orange, purple and white.
Soil
-
Impatiens grow best in a moist, well-drained soil that is rich in humus. Ideally, the pH should be around 7.
Considerations
-
Impatiens do fall prey to red spider mites, aphids, slugs, gray mold, botrytis blight and bacterial leaf spot. Consider insecticides for any bug problems, and consider picking and throwing away diseased flowers, which helps prevent the disease from spreading.
