Nutrition Consultant Laws

There are many different nutritionists practicing in the U.S. today, each with their own experiences and training. Each state has different education and certification requirements for nutritionists. Most, however, will consider the whole person and their individual needs---aiding clients by making lifestyle and nutrition modifications as needed.

  1. Consultation

    • A consumer interested in having a nutritionist help them should look into the education of the individual practitioner. Everyone is different, unfortunately meaning some may not have the knowledge base you deserve.

    Education

    • Many programs are available in the U.S. for certification and degrees in nutrition, so most honest practitioners will have a solid base of physiology and some anatomy, along with protocols for creating health.

    Credentials

    • Within the U.S., a nutritionist or nutritional consultant does not hold a license and is not usually registered because there is no national credentialing board recognized by the government. According to the National Association of Nutrition Professionals, each state has different laws regarding registration for practicing nutrition consulting. Some states even regulate what titles can be endorsed.

    Allowances

    • A nutritionist is generally expected to consult with a client to assess nutritional requirements and overall health. But, this can only be done through discussion and education; a nutritional consultant cannot legally diagnose disease nor prescribe medicine.

    Recognition

    • There are several associations trying to legitimize the profession by creating higher ethical standards and continuing education opportunities for nutritionists. The Holistic Nutrition Credentialing Board is creating a national holistic nutrition board exam with the National Association of Nutrition Professionals. These groups and the American Association of Nutritional Consultants are just a few of the organizations in America rallying for recognition and registration of nutritionists in both state and federal agencies.
