Gin is used to make martinis.

Perhaps you enjoy sipping a gin and tonic poolside or savor a martini after a tough day. If you prefer something sweeter, a Singapore Sling might hit the spot. Gin is versatile, but did you ever stop to ask yourself what's in it? Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Origin

    • Gin was developed as a medication in 17th-century Holland.

By the 18th century, gin was a popular drink in London, where it was being distilled. This evolved into what is still known as London Dry Gin.

    Types

    • Some types of gin are more complex than others. Tanqueray is considered a complex gin because its flavors are layered, spicy, fresh and herbal. Beefeater is more straightforward, with a dominating flavor of juniper berries.

    Ingredients

    • Gin is distilled from grain mash flavored with spices and herbs known as botanicals, but the necessary ingredient is juniper berries.

Other botanicals used in gin include ginger, citrus seed, cinnamon, anise and coriander. Each distillery has its own recipe, resulting in a unique taste.

    Uses

    • While gin is thought of primarily as an alcoholic beverage, it can also be used in cooking and is especially good as an ingredient in seafood sauces.

    Fun Facts

    • James Bond may have preferred a vodka martini. But in this day and age when anything served in a stemmed martini glass is called a martini, purists insist that a true martini is made with gin.

Genever is the Dutch word for gin.
