An elliptical trainer--a cross between a stair climber and a cross-country ski machine--offers a quality, low-impact workout

An elliptical trainer--also known as simply an "elliptical" or "elliptical machine"--allows you to run and walk in a stationary position. It is comparable to other exercise machines and has many features that contribute to an effective cardio workout.

  1. Features

    • Most elliptical trainers allow you to adjust resistance and incline levels, as well as perform a variety of courses. This provides a controlled and varied workout.

    Misconceptions

    • You do not need to work out longer on an elliptical trainer than you would on a treadmill to get the same benefit. Also, using the movable hand rails on the elliptical machine does not work out your upper body all that much.

    Warning

    • Do not push yourself on an elliptical trainer. Accept your limitations. Adjust incline and resistance levels over a period of time until you feel comfortable. Don't overexert yourself. Maintain good posture.

    Potential

    • Elliptical trainers offer a workout comparable to other exercise machines. According to a 2004 study at the Trinity College of Dublin, similar physiological improvements were noted by people using stair-climbers, elliptical trainers and treadmills.

    Benefits

    • According to the Wellness Councils of America, elliptical trainers put less impact on your joints than treadmills by following the natural path of your ankles, knees and hips.

    Recall

    • Not all elliptical trainers are created equal. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has had to recall shoddy elliptical trainers. Beware of cheap, low-quality machines, as they can pose danger.
