Glucosamine Sulfate Vs. Hydrochloride

Glucosamine sulfate and glucosamine hydrochloride, when both are in pure forms, deliver the same amount of glucosamine. Glucosamine is used to treat osteoarthritis.

  1. Glucosamine Hydrochloride

    • Glucosamine hydrochloride is more stable than glucosamine sulfate and has a longer shelf life. It is also about two-thirds the cost of glucosamine sulfate.

    Glucosamine Sulfate

    • Glucosamine sulfate degrades more rapidly, especially when exposed to moisture. It is derived from glucosamine hydrochloride making it about 1.5 times more expensive than glucosamine hydrochloride. Glucosamine sulfate usually has a salt (sodium chloride or potassium chloride) to stabilize it. Commercial glucosamine is 20 percent salt.

    Dosage

    • In order to deliver the same amount of glucosamine, the doses for glucosamine hydrochloride and glucosamine sulfate are 1500mg and 1995mg, respectively. These doses are based on purity (hydrochloride---near 100 percent; sulfate---80 percent).

    Comparison

    • For both forms, if a bottle had sixty 750 mg pills or capsules, you would need 2.66 sulfate pills to two hydrochloride pills (80 pills to 60 pills). Over three months, you would need three bottles of the hydrochloride or four bottles of the sulfate to get the same amount of glucosamine.
