When the Gap originated, its target customers were ages 18 to 25. The Fishers named the store The Gap to emphasize youthfulness and allude to a hot topic at the time, the Generation Gap.

Gap's most popular style initially was the "basic" look, consisting of Gap's signature blue jeans and white cotton t-shirts. The founders realized that jeans were in high demand among youth but that there were few jean selections in other clothing outlets. Gap decided to expand upon their assortment of jeans to accommodate this demand. Gap continues to expand its collection, currently offering clothing for men, women and children.
