Hyalgan Treatment for Arthritis In Knees

Hyalgan is an injectable medication used to treat knee pain caused by osteoarthritis if conservative physical treatments and simple painkillers have not worked.

  1. Description

    • A Hyalgan treatment cycle is one injection a week for five weeks. According to the drug's manufacturer, Sanofi-Aventis, some people may benefit from three injections over three weeks.

    How It Works

    • Hyalgan contains hyaluronate, a substance naturally present in the synovial fluid that nourishes the cartilage of the knee.

    When Not to Use

    • Hyalgan is not for you if you are hypersensitive to preparations using hyaluronate. Use is also contraindicated if you have an infection or skin disease around the injection site or are pregnant or nursing.

    Side Effects

    • According to Sanofi-Aventis, the most common side effects of Hyalgan are pain at the injection site, swelling, heat and/or redness, rash, itching or bruising around the joint. Side effects are usually mild and do not last long.

    Considerations

    • Avoid strenuous activities or prolonged (more than one hour) weight-bearing activities such as jogging or tennis for 48 hours after a Hyalgan injection.
