Texas Requirements for Commission Security Officer License

The Private Security Division of the Texas Department of Public Safety is responsible for propagating requirements and regulations for those who wish to receive a license as a private security officer.

  1. Employment

    • In order to receive a license from the Department of Public Safety, perspective officers must first be employed by a licensed private security company.

    Drug test

    • No licensee is allowed to be placed on duty without passing a drug test.

    Training

    • Applicants must complete 30 hours of security training at a certified security training provider.

    Application process

    • Applicants must submit an application with two completed fingerprint cards, a $25 FBI fingerprint fee, documentation of meeting training requirements, payment of up to $100 to cover required fees and a copy of his/her Texas driver's license. If the applicant is not a citizen of the United States, an alien registration card is also required.

    Additional training

    • Applicants who want to serve as armed officers will need to participate in an additional training program to demonstrate a knowledge of firearms polices.
