Signs & Symptoms of Ascending Colon Disease

The ascending colon is part of the large intestine, which includes the cecum, transverse colon, descending colon and sigmoid colon. According to the American Cancer Society, 150,000 Americans are diagnosed with colon cancer each year.

  1. Location

    • The ascending colon is located on the right side of the intestines, which is relatively large in diameter but has thin walls.

    Tumor Growth

    • Tumors typically grow extremely slowly in the ascending colon and at years might pass before cancerous polyps are large enough to produce symptoms.

    Signs and Symptoms

    • Malignant enlarged polyps can develop on the right side of the colon where the ascending colon is located with few or no indications. Tumors can grow large enough to be touched through the abdominal wall. In addition, light bleeding can occur, causing blood in the stool and symptoms of anemia.

    Screening

    • Regular screening is the best way to find colon cancer.

    Colonoscopy

    • Ascending colon cancer is usually diagnosed with the use of a colonoscope, a very flexible fiber-optic instrument that's able to view most of the large intestines.
