KitchenAid Appliances History

Since introducing its stand mixer in the early 20th century, the KitchenAid Manufacturing Company has gradually expanded its product line to include many different appliances, from blenders to convection ovens. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Early Days

    • Herbert Johnston, an Ohio engineer, had the idea to design a stand mixer in 1908, when he saw a baker laboring to mix bread dough by hand, with an iron spoon. The company released the first commercial mixer in 1914 and the first home mixer in 1919.

    Company Name

    • In 1920, the KitchenAid Manufacturing Company was born, and mixer manufacturing moved to Troy, Ohio. The company name was inspired by the words of an early user of the home mixer, who had deemed it "the best kitchen aid."

    Mixer Evolution

    • Gradually, the company began producing smaller, lighter, more affordable home mixer models, as well as different color mixers. In 1946, mixer production moved to Greenville, Ohio, where it has remained ever since.

    Other Appliances

    • KitchenAid has gone beyond just the stand mixer over the years, introducing appliances such as washing machines (1926), portable dishwashers (1935), refrigerators (1986) and blenders (1992).

    Other Products

    • In 1999, KitchenAid introduced several lines of kitchen products, including textiles, cutlery, cookware and bakeware.
