What Is the Shelf-Life of Dry Dog Food?

Dogs, like humans, prefer fresh food.

Buying dog food in bulk may seem like a good idea at first. It has the potential to save money and reduce trips to the store. But if the food expires or otherwise goes bad before Fido has a chance to eat it, money is wasted not saved.

Time Frame

The expected shelf life of dry dog food is generally one year from the date of manufacture.

Labeling

Many dry dog foods are labeled with a "best if used by" date. Examine the package for this marking and take note of the date.

Storage

The method of storage can effect the shelf life of dry dog food. When stored in a damp environment, kibble may mold. When exposed to excessive heat, the taste can turn rancid.

Preservation

If possible, store dog kibble in it's original package. Place the package in an airtight container to reduce exposure to oxygen, heat, humidity and light. The container should then be stored at room temperature.

Considerations

Dry dog food that is made using natural preservatives, such as vitamin E, often have a shorter shelf-life than those with artificial preservatives. Examine the ingredients to see what kind of preservative your chosen kibble contains.
