What Happens If MRSA Goes Untreated?

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, commonly abbreviated MRSA, is a bacterial infection that is highly resistant to antibiotics called beta-lactams, such as penicillin. MRSA is common in hospital settings, where patients have open wounds and weakened immune systems.

  1. Staph Infection

    • When MRSA is left untreated, many patients get staph infections, short for Staphylococcus. Staph infections can affect various parts of the body but most commonly attack the skin, resulting in boils or pimples on the skin. These boils can be swollen, red and painful. If left untreated, they may also have pus.

    Impetigo

    • Staph infection of the skin caused by MRSA often leads to a condition call impetigo. As the condition worsens, the boils from the staph infection crust over and cause the skin to feel hot. The sores are usually very itchy and commonly appear on the arms, face and legs.

    Ulcer

    • Untreated MRSA can also lead to open wounds and ulcers. The risk of developing ulcers from MRSA is higher for older males.

    Pnuemonia

    • MRSA that is untreated can also lead to pneumonia, which is an infection of the lungs. This may occur if the MRSA bacterium spreads and enters the lung.

    Death

    • In the most severe cases, untreated MRSA can result in death. To reduce the risk of fatality, receive treatment for MRSA and practice overall good hygiene by cleaning cuts and scrapes and frequently washing sheets, towels and clothes.
