SUV Vs. Truck

SUV Vs. Truck thumbnail
True SUVs are just as capable as their truck bretheren.

The term "sport utility vehicle" (SUV) should ideally apply only to those heavy-hauling vehicles that are based on a pick-up truck chassis.

  1. Definition

    • The EPA's definition of a truck or SUV includes the criteria that it has at least an 8,500 lb. gross vehicle weight, but many manufacturers market station wagons with lower gross weight ratings as SUVs.

    Chassis

    • While most trucks are built using a body-on-frame design, many modern SUVs use the weaker unibody (frameless) construction of smaller sedans.

    Off-Road

    • Trucks tend to be better off-road largely because they have more ground clearance and off-road tuned suspensions. This contrasts sharply with many station wagon "SUVs" that allow for only the pretension of off-road ability.

    Towing

    • Though full-sized, truck-based SUVs are just as capable as trucks when used for towing, cross-over and mid-sized SUVs usually carry no higher tow rating than the sedans on which they are based.

    Emissions

    • Because the emissions of trucks and SUVs are less-regulated, manufacturers try to get car-based station wagons certified as SUVs. This doesn't mean that they have the towing or off-road capability of trucks, but it does mean that they appear to.
