Carpooling saves energy.

Carpooling has received quite a bit of attention as people have become more environmentally aware and friendly. Several states have hopped on the environmental bandwagon and created carpool lanes and carpooling registries in an attempt to encourage carpooling among residents.

  1. Carbon Dioxide and Monoxide

    • According to Colorado Pollution Prevention, 100 carpooling people can prevent 1,320 pounds of carbon monoxide and 2,376,000 pounds of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere in a single year.

    Carpool Decline

    • "USA Weekend" reports that carpooling decreased between 1980 and 2005, despite rising gas costs and an increase in carpool lanes and programs.

    A Single Car

    • La Trobe University's environmental facts about carpooling claims that a small car with a 1.6 liter engine creates 200 grams (almost 1/2 pound) of carbon dioxide for every kilometer (about 1/2 mile) it travels.

    Cons

    • Some people choose not to carpool so they can combine commuting with running errands. Others drive themselves to keep commute times as short as possible. According to "USA Weekend," each person in a carpool adds 5 minutes to their travel time.

    Who Carpools?

    • Colorado Pollution Prevention states that more people commute in Los Angeles than anywhere else in the United States.
