What Happens If the Spleen Is Removed?

The spleen is an organ that is responsible for fighting infection. It is also useful in the processing of red blood cells. Though it is important, the body can function without it so it can be removed if necessary.

  1. Splenectomy

    • The surgery for spleen removal is known as a splenectomy. It is done when the spleen is damaged or diseased.

    Procedure

    • The spleen is removed under a general anesthesia. Laparoscopic surgery may be done for spleen removal.

    Risks

    • There are risks both during and after the removal of the spleen including but not limited to injury to nearby organs, infection, blood clots and collapsed lung.

    Infections

    • Those who have had a spleen removed are more prone to infections and may need to take antibiotics to prevent infections. Children are more prone to infection than adults.

    Compensation

    • Other organs in the body compensate and do the functions normally associated with the spleen after the spleen has been removed.
