Jeans: what to know before you buy.

Shopping for clothes is an enjoyable experience for a lot of women, but shopping for jeans can be anything but fun. Knowing what to look for when you go to buy can put some of the pleasure back in your trip to the mall.

  1. The Label

    • Misses jeans are sized with even numbers: 2 to 20. Juniors are sized with odd numbers: 3 to 17. Knowing this, you can choose the appropriate jeans even if they are not clearly marked as "Misses" or "Juniors."

    Sizing

    • Don't let the name fool you--Juniors are not only for young girls. It all depends on your body size and shape. Junior size jeans are smaller in the waist and hips. Misses are roomier in both.

    Style

    • Trendy styles are no longer found only in the Junior section. Misses jeans can be just as hip and stylish.

    Trying On

    • Try on every pair before buying--even when buying your usual size. Each manufacturer sizes things differently and it's even possible for the same size from the same manufacturer to fit differently.

    Stretch Factor

    • Jeans typically stretch more than other types of pants, so those that fit loosely at first may be too big after a few hours of wear.
