Lyrica Treatment for Fibromyalgia

Lyrica (pregabalin) is an anticonvulsant used to treat nerve pain. It is the first medication approved by the FDA for treating fibromyalgia and may be effective in reducing the pain associated with the condition.

  1. Uses

    • Lyrica is prescribed to reduce nerve pain and improve mobility in patients with fibromyalgia. Other uses include treating epileptic seizures, diabetic nerve pain and the pain that accompanies shingles.

    Pharmacology

    • Lyrica is a structural derivative of the neurotransmitter GABA, according to rxlist.com. It is thought to work by reducing excessive electrical signals caused by dysfunctional nerves, thereby reducing fibromyalgia pain.

    Side Effects

    • Like all medications, Lyrica may cause unwanted side effects. The most commonly reported side effects of Lyrica include drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation and dizziness.

    Legal Status

    • Lyrica is approved by the FDA for treating fibromyalgia. It is available by prescription only and is classified as a Schedule V medication (lowest potential for abuse and addiction) by the DEA.

    Warning

    • According to emedtv.com, Lyrica and other anti-epileptic medications increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors. If you experience depression or thoughts of self-harm after starting Lyrica, seek medical attention promptly.
