Ceramic brake pads represent the newest advances in brake pad technology, but that doesn't necessarily mean that traditional carbon-metallic pads are completely outdated.

  1. History

    • Carbon metallic pads began to replace traditional asbestos-based brake pads in the early 1980s. Ceramics were first used in 1994.

    Compounds

    • Carbon metallics use a pad compound composed of mineral fibers, Aramid (a polymer also used in body armor), cellulose, chopped glass, and steel. Ceramic pads use ceramic powder, Aramid, and other plastics.

    Noise

    • Ceramics vibrate at a higher frequency than can be detected by the human ear. This makes them far quieter in operation than squeal-prone metallics.

    Brake Dust

    • Metallic pads use a compound that is both black and charged with static electricity. This means that metallics will often coat wheels with black grime, a problem that ceramic pads do not cause.

    Performance

    • In general, metallics have a broad heat range for optimum performance, but can fade very quickly at high temperatures. Ceramics operate in a narrower range, but work much better at higher brake temperatures.
