Facts About Chinese Inventions thumbnail
China has contributed many inventions throughout history.

Legions of Chinese dynasties have made impressive contributions to society through scientific and cultural inventions. As traditional customs are passed down through generations, the Chinese have shown that they can embrace modernity with new inventions.

  1. Gunpowder

    • The Song Dynasty (960 to 1280 AD) is credited with inventing gunpowder in the 1100s, an invention that forever changed the face of war; they used gunpowder for fireworks, cannons and flame throwers.

    Paper Money

    • China developed paper money in the 9th century, hundreds of years before many European countries, such as Sweden in 1661. The money was called "flying money," because it was light enough to fly out of someone's hand.

    Compass

    • The compass was developed during the reign of the Song Dynasty and enabled the Chinese to travel and explore the world through better navigation.

    Printing

    • A very important Chinese invention is printing, which was developed during the Tang Dynasty (618 to 907). Although ink and paper already existed, printing was a quicker, mechanical way of reproducing material.

    Porcelain

    • Porcelain, a delicate pottery, is appropriately also called "china" because of its origins in China. Tea, another Chinese invention, could then be served in clay cups.
