What Is Vermiculite Composed Of?

Vermiculite is a natural mineral similar in appearance to mica. In gardening, vermiculite is most often used as a soil conditioner; it has also been used in construction as an insulative material. Vermiculite occurs in volcanic soil as a complex of several elemental compounds. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Chemical Name

    • In chemistry, vermiculite is formally known as hydrated laminar magnesium-aluminum-ironsilicate. This name refers to its water content, streamline texture and four chemical components.

    Magnesium

    • Elemental magnesium is one component of mineral vermiculite. Magnesium is partially responsible for vermiculite's whitish appearance.

    Aluminum

    • Aluminum is one of vermiculite's core components and gives unprocessed vermiculite its glossy, metallic appearance.

    Iron Silicate

    • Iron silicate, also called fayalite, also helps to form mineral vermiculite. Iron silicate gives vermiculite an alkaline pH.

    Effects

    • Because of vermiculite's unique chemical composition, it is extremely useful for enhancing soil's structure and its ability to retain water. Vermiculite also retains heat well and can be used in many applications as an insulative material.

    Considerations

    • Vermiculite itself contains no toxic or carcinogenic compounds. However, some older forms of vermiculite insulation have been contaminated or mixed with asbestos.
