Alcohol & Lunesta

Lunesta is a prescription sleep medication from the sedative-hypnotic family. Alcohol (ethanol) and Lunesta are central nervous system depressants that share many similar effects on the mind and body.

  1. Uses

    • Lunesta is prescribed to treat insomnia, while alcohol is primarily a recreational drug ingested for its intoxicating effects.

    Effects

    • As CNS depressants, Lunesta and alcohol slow heart rate and breathing and may impair judgment and coordination. Lunesta has a more sedating effect, while alcohol reduces inhibitions and produces feelings of euphoria and changes in sensory perception.

    Adverse Reactions

    • According to emedtv, the most common side effects of Lunesta include drowsiness, headache, infections and nausea. Negative effects of alcohol include vomiting, memory loss ("blackout"), aggression and headaches.

    Interaction

    • According to drugabuse.gov, mixing depressants like Lunesta and alcohol increases the risk of fatal respiratory depression and overdose.

    Warning

    • If you experience suicidal thoughts, chest pain or changes in mood or behavior while taking Lunesta, seek medical help immediately. Never attempt to drive or perform other potentially hazardous tasks under the influence of alcohol or Lunesta.
