Recovery Period After Gallstone Surgery

Gallstones are masses that develop in the gallbladder. Surgery to remove the gallbladder may be necessary if a person has pain from gallstones. After gallbladder surgery, people need anywhere from a few days to several weeks to recover.

  1. Types

    • There are two types of surgery to remove a gallbladder: open and laparoscopic surgery. In open surgery, the gallbladder is removed through a large incision and with laparoscopic surgery, the gallbladder is removed through several small cuts.

    Recovery for Open Surgery

    • Patients who have open gallbladder surgery stay in the hospital for 2 to 6 days. It will take 4 to 6 weeks to recover.

    Recovery for Laparoscopic Surgery

    • If you have laparoscopic surgery, you shouldn't have to stay more than one day in the hospital and may even go home the same day the surgery is performed. It takes about a week to recover from the surgery.

    Considerations

    • Take it easy in the days following surgery. Gradually increase walking and if you have to make any sudden movements, such as sneeze or cough, place your hand over your abdomen to lessen strain on your stitches.

    Warning

    • If you develop a fever over 101° F, notice abdominal swelling, or blood or pus draining from an incision, contact your doctor immediately.
