Many different types of video games are available for both consoles and computers and the way you control them can differ greatly. Computers use keyboards and mice to play PC games, while consoles use console-specific controllers to play.

Hotkeys can be very useful when gaming and the keyboard allows you to set them. A hotkey is a shortcut for an in-game movement or menu that can be assigned to any key on the keyboard. This allows you to place specific movements and commands exactly where you feel comfortable with them.

First person shooters are games that revolve around aiming and shooting targets or enemies. Sometimes it is difficult to get used to aiming with a video game controller because you have to move the "thumbstick" to control your cross hair. With keyboard and mouse control you can use your mouse as the cross hair, which can make for a much smoother and easier sense of aiming.

Platformers are games that require precision of movement and the ability to complete successive jumps and acrobatics across platforms and landscapes. Sometimes it can be difficult to control a character in 360 degrees with a keyboard as there are only up, down, left and right arrow keys. With the thumbstick of a console controller you can move the character 360 degrees.

Keyboards and console controllers can vary in price when they need to be replaced. A controller must be console-specific, while a USB keyboard will fit any computer USB port. The cost can be very different or similar depending on what types of controllers or keyboards you purchase.

Some games on consoles and computers are using chat systems so players can communicate with each other in game. Some games allow players to chat with microphones but some only allow them to chat through text. It can be very easy to type text using a keyboard, but using a game controller might hinder the ability to communicate through text quickly.
