German Culture Description

German Culture Description thumbnail
Germany is famous for its clocks.

During the first and second centuries B.C., Teutonic tribes from northern Europe brought their language and customs southward into a region that quickly came to be recognized as culturally unique. This was the beginning of Germany.

  1. Food

    • German people enjoy hearty food that contains generous amounts of meat, potatoes and breads such as rye and pumpernickel. Bratwurst and sauerkraut are favorites at festivals.

    Religion

    • While Germany is predominantly a Christian nation, the religious loyalties of its population are split, primarily between Catholicism and Protestantism. The Lutheran Church had its beginning here.

    Oktoberfest

    • Every September, the city of Munich hosts a 16-day festival known as Oktoberfest, which is the largest beer festival in the world. The event, which also features food and traditional folk music, attracts over six million people annually.

    The Black Forest

    • The beautiful Black Forest region of southern Germany figures prominently in folk tales, such as Hansel and Gretel. It is also widely known for the invention and production of the finest cuckoo clocks in the world.

    Music

    • German people love classical music and they support over 100 symphony orchestras. Each summer, their country hosts Wachen Open Air, which is proclaimed as the largest outdoor heavy-metal festival in the world.
