Can You Be Exposed to HPV & Not Be Infected?

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is a sexually transmitted infection of the skin of the genitals of males and females. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 20 million Americans are infected with HPV at any time, with 6 million more being infected each year.

  1. HPV

    • HPV is a virus that is closely related to herpes. It infects a person from skin-to-skin contact and may lie dormant for a while before surfacing as lesions of the genital and urinary area in both males in females. In some women, HPV infection may lead to cervical cancer.

    Exposure

    • You may be exposed to HPV if you have skin-to-skin contact with an infected person. It is not necessary for the contact to be sexual, and the infected person does not need to have active lesions to infect others.

    HPV Disease

    • Many people exposed to HPV naturally clear the virus from their bodies without any symptoms. That is not to say that HPV exposure did not lead to infection or that the virus did not cause a change in their skin cells, which places them at greater risk of cervical cancer.

    Immunity

    • The immune system varies from one person to another. So people react differently to infection. Some may have full symptoms of the infection, while others will barely notice it. But why take chances?

    HPV Prevention

    • A vaccine against HPV is licensed in the United States for men and women ages 9 to 26. Proper use of condoms and other safe sexual practices help prevent infection with HPV.
