Why Was Hydroxycut Taken Off the Market

Hydroxycut is the brand name for one of 14 nutritional supplements that were recalled in May 2009 because of certain health risks (according to WebMD.com). In 2004, Hydroxycut products that contained the herb ephedra were recalled after the government banned its use.

  1. History

    • The 14 Hydroxycut products were taken off the market because 23 people sustained some type of liver damage from using it. Moreover, a 19-year-old man's death was directly attributed to the use of the supplement, which is primarily used for weight loss and burning fat. (See reference 1 below)

    Types of Symptoms

    • In addition to liver problems, the FDA recommended the product recall because people who used Hydroxycut also suffered from cardiovascular problems and rhabdomyolysis, which is a disease known to damage muscle tissues. (See reference 2 below)

    Other Types of Symptoms

    • The 14 Hydroxycut products that were recalled in 2009 were also known to cause seizures in some people. The products that were banned because of ephedra were known to cause tremors, heart palpitations and insomnia. (See reference 2 below)

    Warning

    • Some Hydroxycut products are still sold in the United States, though health officials are still evaluating other ingredients that may be toxic or hazardous to one's health (according to Msnbc.com).

    Significance

    • More than 9 million Hydroxycut products were sold in the United States last year. There are still a number of potential health-related cases that may be attributed to the use of Hydroxycut. (See reference 3 below)
