What Does DVD-R Mean?

DVDs look like CDs. They are a similar technology, but they are able to store more data in the same amount of space. DVD-R is one format for storing data on a DVD disc.

  1. DVD

    • DVD used to mean "Digital Video Disc," but more recently has come to mean "Digital Versatile Disc." A DVD is the same size as a CD, being 120 mm in diameter and 1.2 mm in thickness, but differs from a CD in its storage capacity.

    Storage Capacity of a DVD-R

    • A DVD-R can either be one- or two-sided. The majority of them are one-sided, however.

A one sided, single layer disc can store 4.7 GB (gigabytes).
A two sided, single layer disc can store 9.4 GB.

    DVD Forum

    • DVD-R technology was developed by Pioneer in 1997, and has been adopted by the DVD Forum, which is an international association of manufacturers, software firms, and content providers, as an attempt to create a standard format for the DVD industry.

The Forum is composed of companies such as Mitsubishi, Sony, Hitachi, and Time Warner. Thus, it has wide influence on the industry.

    DVD-R

    • DVD "dash R" was the first format to be released that could be played with standalone DVD players. The format is compatible with the vast majority of DVD players and CD-ROMs.

Since there are different, and competing, ways to store data on a DVD, the "-R" designates the particular format used by the DVD Forum. Its main competitor, DVD+R, is newer and differs from DVD-R in some ways.

    DVD-R is not re-writable

    • Once data is written to a DVD-R, it cannot be erased or re-written. There exists, in addition to the DVD-R technology, a related kind called DVD-RW, which is the same format and is considered the standard by the DVD Forum. The difference is that the DVD-RW can be erased or re-written many times with different data, making DVD-RW re-usable.
