Before you consider entering into a fake marriage in order to gain U.S. citizenship, consider the harsh consequences of an immigration marriage. An illegal marriage is not only unethical, it is illegal.

  1. Immigrant

    • If an immigrant attempts to gain citizenship through marriage fraud, deportation may be in his future. Additionally, all future visa petitions may be denied.

    The American Citizen

    • The American citizen commits a criminal offense when entering into a bogus marriage for a counterpart to attain permanent residency. The penalty may include up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

    Marriage Myth

    • Marriage to a U.S. citizen does not automatically entitle you to permanent residency. You must live together and provide proof that you lived together for two years before the U.S. Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will consider a petition for citizenship. During that two years, you may be issued a temporary green card.

    Marriage Interview

    • One way the USCIS tries to detect a false marriage is to separate the husband and wife and interview them individually. The interview may be intense and may cover everything from wedding details to a description of your bedroom and where the bathroom towels are stored. If the answers do not match up, your green card may not be renewed.

    Second Chance

    • If your application is denied, you do have the right to file an appeal.
