Treatment of Amebic Colitis

Amebic colitis, also referred to as amebic dysentery, occurs when the colon is infected by the single-celled ameba parasite. This infection takes place when contact is made with infected food and water. There are several options available for the treatment of amebic colitis.

  1. Metronidazole

    • The drug metronidazole is the most common treatment for amebic colitis, according to the Internet Journal of Advanced Nursing Practice. This drug is used to combat both parasitic and bacterial infections. Nausea, dry mouth and headaches are some of the side effects associated with metronidazole. It is available in both pill and injection forms.

    Ciprofloxacin

    • Ciprofloxacin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections, including amebic colitis. Some of the known side effects of this drug include diarrhea, vomiting and yeast infections.

    Paromomycin

    • Paromomycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic. Paromomycin kills the bacterial cells associated with amebic colitis by disturbing the protein synthesis in the bacteria. Adverse effects include abdominal pain, diarrhea and nausea.

    Metizol

    • The antibiotic known as Metizol treats amebic colitis by stopping the growth of protozoa and bacteria. Too much Metizol decreases the effectiveness of the drug. Dark urine, abdominal pain and headaches are just a few of the side effects of this drug.

    Helidac

    • Helidac is used to treat infections such as emebic colitis. If you do not complete the prescribed dosage of this medication, the treatment will not work. A black tongue is the most noticeable side effect of this medication.
