Information About Ground Blind Deer Hunting

Deer hunters traditionally hunted on the ground before tree stands became popular. Ground blinds are becoming popular again and manufacturers produce more styles every year. In addition to deer, ground blinds can be used for hunting turkeys and waterfowl.

  1. Ground Blind Styles

    • Ground blinds come in many styles, from homemade blinds with plywood walls to commercial models with hard-plastic walls. Mesh-walled, tent-style blinds have become popular because they are lightweight, portable and easy to conceal because of their camouflage patterns.

    Advantages

    • Ground blinds are great for hunters who don't like heights. Shoot-through mesh walls allow bow-hunters to be completely concealed, which is critical when drawing a bow. Blinds also provide shelter in rain or snow and are perfect for areas with no trees or with trees too small to support a hunter.

    Disadvantages

    • Because they are on the ground, you can't see as far from a ground blind as you can from an elevated blind. Also, your scent is closer to the ground, so deer are more likely to detect it.

    Setting Up Your Blind

    • Set up your blind well before season so deer can get accustomed to it. Tuck it into natural cover and put limbs, cornstalks or other natural cover around it so that it blends in.

    Hunting From Ground Blinds

    • Wear scent-control clothing. Spray the blind with scent-killing or masking spray. Keep the panel behind you zipped shut if possible to prevent deer in front of you from seeing your silhouette.
