Information About Rewards on Credit Cards

Credit card use has advantages. Make sure you apply for credit cards that have rewards. If you use your credit cards correctly--paying them off monthly--you can not only establish great credit, but also get rewards for using them. These rewards include cash, hotel credits, air travel credits, gas credits, and department store credit.

  1. Cash Back Rewards

    • Discover credit cards offer cash back for every purchase you make. The company has offered this for years. Other credit card companies such as Chase are starting to offer this option, too. A reward card is one of the best to have, since you can use it one of two ways: apply the cash to the balance you owe or get a check for it. Just remember you have to reach a certain amount before you can use it.

    Hotel Rewards

    • Some reward credit cards offer free nights at certain hotels. You will earn points for every purchase you make on these cards and once you reach a certain amount, you can redeem the points for a free night. There are restrictions on when you can use these free nights; however, if you travel frequently, these free nights can be very handy.

    Air Travel Rewards

    • If you do a lot of traveling, besides a hotel reward credit card, you may also be interested in having an air travel reward credit card. This will give you a chance to get discounts and even free air travel. Again, you must reach a certain point amount to qualify and there are restrictions on when you can use the air travel.

    Gas Credit Rewards

    • Many gasoline companies such as Shell and Exxon offer gas credits to people who use their credit card. In addition, the major credit card companies such as Discover and Chase are offering gas credit card rewards. Since gas is so expensive, these credit card rewards have become very popular.

    Department Store Rewards

    • Many department stores offer credit cards to their customers. Some of them such as Target offer rewards with their credit cards. For example, once you reach a certain point amount using a Target credit card, you get one day where you can get 10 percent off all your purchases.

    Zero Percent Introductory

    • Another popular reward program offered is a zero percent introductory program. This means you can transfer your high balances to the card without any interest. If you pay the balance within the introductory period, there isn't any interest charged on the money.
